After the entry of movies from award-winning directors Shirley Frimpong Manso and Peter Sedufia recently, a new Ghanaian movie is coming to Netflix.
‘Azali’, the Ghanaian movie which was submitted for the 2020 Oscars is the one coming to Netflix.
Even though it made a lot of history last year after it became the first Ghanaian film to be submitted to the Oscars for consideration in the ‘Best International Feature Film category’, it was not selected.
It has however achieved a great stride with the entry into the Netflix selections.
After the news of its entry to Netflix became public, the Director, Kwabena Gyansah, expressed his satisfaction with the film’s success so far.
He stated in an interview “When we were filming ‘Azali’, we didn’t know it will make such an impact in the film space but it has and we are very grateful to God and everyone for that. We are also delighted ‘Azali’ is going to be available on ‘Netflix’ because the film will be seen by a global audience and help reinforce the credibility in Ghanaian filmmakers”.
The much-talked-about film tells the story of 14-year-old Amina, who flees an arranged marriage with a 70-year-old farmer only to end up a victim of human traffickers, but somehow escapes to Accra.
Amina later was torn between the decision of picking between surviving Ghana’s bustling capital and returning home to an arranged marriage.
It stars debutant Asana Alhassan as Amina, Adjetey Anang, Ama K. Abebrese, Peter Ritchie, Akofa Edjeani Asiedu, and Emmanuel Nii Adom Quaye.
It is written by Gwandellen Quartey and produced by Ananse Entertainment in collaboration with Motion Revolutions, both Ghanaian companies.
