The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has announced the government’s decision to absorb the electricity bills of the vulnerable for three months as measures to fight against the Coronavirus.

In his latest address to the nation on Thursday, President Akufo-Addo said consumers who used more than 50-kilowatt hours per month will have a 50 per cent of their bills being absorbed by the government from for April to June.

“We have decided further measure of mitigation for Ghanaians for the next three months…The government will fully absorb electricity bills for the poorest of the poor, ie: lifeline consumers. This will cover persons who consume 0 to 50-kilowatt hours per month for this period. This forms part of relief interventions by the state amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. Other categories of consumers will enjoy a 50 per cent discount within the same period. For all other consumers, residential and commercial, the government will absorb 50 per cent of your electricity bill for this period using your March 2020 bill as the benchmark,” he stated.

President Akufo-Addo explained that if someone is to pay GHC100.00 of electricity bill, the fellow will pay GHC50.00 as the government will absorb the remaining GHC50.00.

He observed that this come as a relief to industries, enterprises and households in these difficult times.

President Akufo-Addo advised Ghanaians in to exercise discipline in the use of electricity and water.
