The founder of the Ghana Movie Awards, Mr. Fred Nuamah, has finally broken his silence regarding the widespread backlash following the decision to award winners with a locally designed fan, popularly known as ‘papa,’ as a plaque during the recently held event.
Speaking in an interview with Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s ‘Showbiz A-Z’ program, Mr. Nuamah clarified the controversy, explaining that two separate awards ceremonies were held on the same night at the same venue — the Ghana Movie Awards and the Ghana TV Series Awards.

According to him, the recipients of the ‘papa’ plaques were winners of the Ghana TV Series Awards, not the prestigious Ghana Movie Awards, which is traditionally known for its signature golden plaques.
He added that the decision to award the winners of the Ghana TV series awards with the ‘papa’ plaques was taken because the organizers wanted something that was local and highlighted our culture.
“The Ghana TV Series Awards intentionally adopted a more local and culturally significant theme, which is why the ‘papa’ was used as the award plaque,” he explained.
Mr. Fred Nuamah was however quick to add that following the backlash they have received, the team and have decided to reassess the choice of the award design to avoid further misunderstandings in future.
The 2025 Ghana Movie Awards marked a grand return on Saturday, January 18, 2025, after a hiatus of several years. The event, which brought together celebrated filmmakers, actors, and industry stakeholders, took place at the iconic Accra International Conference Centre.
