Huawei’s Consumer Business Group is certainly on the rise, and this was fully on show in Accra as the global smartphone giant makes another indelible mark with launch of its new Huawei Y9 device in Ghana on Thursday October, 8 at the Tang Palace Hotel.
Simon Lui, CBG West Africa said Huawei’s continuous growth in the global market and its increasing brand influence have benefited from its multi-year commitment to technology innovation and R&D investment.
According to Huawei’s annual report, Huawei’s R&D investment for 2017 was RMB 89.7 billion, accounting for approximately 14.9% of the revenue, and the accumulated R&D expenses over the past ten years exceeded RMB 394 billion.
He added, that in the future, Huawei will continue to innovate its products and technology whilst surprising consumers, with a commitment to make its brand truly loved by global consumers.
According to Marketing Manager for Huawei Ghana, Dennis Fixon Laryea, the Y9 is the first smartphone to feature four Artificial Intelligence (AI) cameras as well Wi-Fi bridging, features he claims are rare in the smartphone market.
“This is the first device in the market that has a 6.5 FHD+ display notched screen. It is also the first phone in the market that has 4 AI cameras – 2 at the back, 2 in front. And this is the first device that comes with a Wi-Fi signal bridge where you can bridge your Wi-Fi to other people,” Dennis Laryea said.

The Huawei Y9 is a 5.93-inch smartphone with a 4 GB RAM and 64 GB ROM, boasting of a Kirin 710 octa-core processor. Weighing 173g, the Huawei Y9 spots a 4000 mAH battery, which ensures 65 hours of music, 9 video hours as well as up to 52 hours of GSM calls.
He also added that the company put the taste and preference of the youth into consideration while working on the Y9 hence they made youth friendly.
“The Y means Youth or Young, so basically this is a youthful device with very high specs at very affordable price. So we are telling people not to break their bank to get that special-feature phone they want but then you have to use a little of your money to get that special phone you want. For who like taking selfies, there is no point in stressing to look out for which of the photos to post after taking them, with the Y9 , all that you need is a click and you are good to go.” he said.

The launch brought together giants in the technology and phone industry, media personalities as well as dealers in smartphones, it was a mix of music, comedy, food and drinks.
Apart from Comedian DKB delivering well as the host of the launch, firms like Telefonika, Melcom Group of Companies, Franko Trading Enterprise and Compu Ghana were recognized awarded for their contribution to making the Huawei brand the preferred one.
