While I was surfing the web late last night, I came across a video of singer Fantana on the Instagram page of GHOne TV.
She was the studios of the EIB owned TV station to have an exclusive interview with Regina Van-Helvert on their show, ‘Rhymtz Live’.
Among the many things issues she raised in the interview, one particular point she made about her former labelmate, Wendy Shay is what I seek to lightly address this morning.
Fantana in the interview labeled Ruftown Records signed musician Wendy Shay as a local champion.
To quote her, she stated: “Wendy Shay is part of the local champions, not because I don’t like her or anything. But because she hasn’t really achieved anything outside of Ghana for the people to be like oh my God you got what I’m saying.“
She also added: “If there are listing big big musicians in the country, it will be Efya, Becca, Wiyaala and then they will start with higher local champions which is like Wendy, etc.”
After listening to her, I asked myself where she will put herself in this ranking she decided to do.
In as much as I am not a big fan of Wendy Shay myself, I believe she deserves some little bit of respect, especially from people like Fantana, who do not have more than five songs and not a single hit song as professional musicians.
Names like Becca, Efya, and more importantly Wiyaala have been great torchbearers and shining lights for the female front of the music industry in Ghana, but in the last two years, the sort of work Wendy Shay has done must not be disregarded.
After making her breakthrough, it has been bangers after bangers, something Fantana has not been able to do despite claiming to be the ‘richest’ female musician in Ghana.
I hope Fantana will focus on building her craft and build it to at least the level Wendy Shay has got to as a ‘high local champion’ and stop flooding social media with her nudes.
